Holliday Deal Back On?
July 24th, 2009 | by larryyocum |According to ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian, a deal between the Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals is very close. Apparently the deal is very close to the earlier one that was reported and that I speculated on here.
The current deal on the table would reportedly net the A’s third baseman Brett Wallace, outfielder Shane Peterson and right-handed pitcher Clayton Mortenson. The deal would revolve around Wallace as he appears to be a future everyday player at third base. The other two prospects are mid-level types and would likely just add depth to the minor league system.
This would be a good deal for the A’s as it would appear that their time with Holliday is limited. They are a team that is not competing now and this would net them a promising return as well as save them money on Holliday’s current contract. Brett Wallace is a promising young third baseman and is exactly the type of player that the A’s need to look for in a deal that would involve Holliday.
The Cardinals appeared reluctant to complete a deal earlier and include Wallace, but perhaps the current surge by Matt Holliday has convinced them that he is the type of player that they need to push them over the top. Stay tuned for more details.
