Free Agency: Don’t Hold Your Breath
November 19th, 2009 | by jrussell |Doesn’t it feel like Billy Beane focuses on the “youth movement” every year? It sure feels that way to me. Of course, it’s easy to forget all of the money and youth they gave up last year trying to bring in proven veterans like Matt Holliday, Jason Giambi, Nomar Garciaparra, and Orlando Cabrera. As we know, those guys didn’t do a whole lot and the team actually played much better once they were all traded and/or released.
When you consider the crop of free agents that the A’s might actually go after (Adam Kennedy, Justin Ducscherer from their own team), I can’t say I would advocate overspending on Miguel Tejada, Carlos Delgado or someone like that. I have heard that they might trade young pitching for a bat but I don’t know if anyone on the trade market gets me that excited.
So, I think we accept that this year’s promotional materials will feature Andrew Bailey, Kurt Suzuki, Rajai Davis, Ryan Sweeney, and a bunch of young, talented pitchers. Plus, we may see one or two of our prized minor leaguers entrench themselves in the starting lineup.
You know what… I’m ok with it. At least we have a plan.
