The A’s Make Some Moves
December 4th, 2009 | by jrussell |All right, there’s some action coming out of Oakland Athletics HQ. No, they did not pay top dollar for Roy Halladay or Jason Bay but they did do a couple of nice things:
1. The A’s signed Joey Devine to a 1-year deal. This is a good move because Devine was originally going to be the A’s closer. Then he got hurt and they were going to move to Ziegler until Andrew Bailey won that gig. But, you can never have too many good arms in your bullpen and the A’s have got themselves a pretty good pen right now. And, don’t forget, Devine had a 6-1 record with a 0.59 ERA and a save in 2008 so the dude’s legit. They do need to re-sign Michael Weurtz soon but overall, good move.
2. This happened a little while ago, but the A’s signed 3B Dallas McPherson to a minor league deal. This is pretty minor but the former second round draft pick did get several minor league players of the year honors while in the Angels farm system so you never know.
3. And, another move to stockpile third basemen, the A’s made a trade to the Cubs for third baseman Jake Fox and second baseman Aaron Miles for Jeff Gray and some minor league dudes I’ve never heard of. Granted, I’ve never heard of Fox or Miles but after reading about him, the guy batted .409 with 17HR and 53RBI in only 45 games for the Cubs AAA team and hit 11HR and 44RBI in 82 games for the Cubs after he was called up. Not great but not terrible either (certainly not worse than Bobby Crosby did). Miles has been pretty injury prone although he does have a .282 career batting average.
As I said, nothing earth shattering, but some nice little moves toward improvement.
